Dynamics of an Age-structured Metapopulation Model

چکیده
We introduce a metapopulation model that includes both landscape changes (patch destruction and recreation) and age-dependent metapopulation dynamics. A threshold quantity is derived and related to the existence of an ecologically nontrivial equilibrium, to the stability of the speciesfree equilibrium, and to weak and strong persistence of the species. We provide examples to illustrate how age-related changes in patch colonization and extinction rates can alter metapopulation persistence. Future field studies may need to address the temporal dynamics that characterize local populations in fragmented landscapes.

Connectivity effects on productivity, stability, and persistence in a herring metapopulation model
Diverse and interacting spawning groups of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) have varying degrees of independence to environmental conditions. How these population components respond independently to the same set of environmental conditions, and are connected through straying or entrainment, will contribute to the aggregate metapopulation dynamics. The consequences of connectivity for producti...
متن کاملSimple rules for establishment of effective marine protected areas in an age-structured metapopulation.
The implementation of effective protected areas is one of the central goals of modern conservation biology. In the context of fisheries management and marine ecosystem conservation, marine reserves often play a significant role to achieve sustainable fisheries management. Consequently, a substantial number of studies have been conducted to establish broad rules for the creation of MPAs, or to t...
متن کاملWhen group dispersal and Allee effect shape metapopulation dynamics
The dispersal ability of a species will be critical for how population dynamics are realized in spatially structured systems. To date, the effect of group dispersal on metapopulation dynamics is poorly understood. Here, we investigate how group dispersal and Allee effects shape metapopulation dynamics identifying conditions in which group dispersal can be an advantage over independent dispersal...
متن کاملEvolution of Specialization on Re- source Utilization in Structured Metapopulations
We study the evolution of resource utilization in a structured discrete time metapopulation model with an infinite number of patches, prone to local catastrophes that wipe out the entire local population but leave the patch itself habitable. We assume that there are two distinct resources in each patch and the strategy of an individual is the degree of specialization on the usage of these resou...
متن کاملA demographic, spatially explicit patch occupancy model of metapopulation dynamics and persistence
Patch occupancy models are extremely important and popular tools for understanding the dynamics, and predicting the persistence, of spatially structured populations. Typically this endeavor is facilitated either by models from classic metapopulation theory focused on spatially explicit, dispersal-driven colonization–extinction dynamics and generally assuming perfect detection, or by more recent...
